Nurburgring in the Spring

Postby Molon_Labe on Tue Jan 19, 2010 1:54 am

Hey guys!

This April, I'll be going to Paris for a week and I have recently discovered that the Nurburgring is only 4 hours away, by car.
The words "day" and "trip" came to mind. After a little research, I found this site: www.rsrnurburg.com. They offer half day (4 hours, 6 laps) and full day (12 hours, 10 laps) packages including car rental, fuel and lap tickets. I'm thinking about doing a half day with their Alfa Romeo 75. This would cost around 550 euros. They also have a Clio 197 for the same price, but I'm leaning towards the Alfa because it's RWD and the Renault is FWD.

This would be my first time to the 'ring and I was wondering if anyone had ever been and, if so, if they could share any of their wisdom with me. Namely, has anyone had experience with this rental agency? Does it look like I'd be getting a good deal? Any tips for how to handle myself on the 'ring, itself? Is there anything I should do to prep specifically for this event? Stuff like that.

(Unfortunately, bringing my own car is out of the question and the nicer cars that they have to rent require classes that, ultimately, I just cannot afford).

Thanks!

That answered my two questions. Sounds awesome, but €550 is what, $800? For full day?

€550 is $775 and that's for a half-day in their stage 3 Alfa Romeo 75.
Then it's €500 ($705) for a half-day in the stage 2 Alfa or the Clio 197.
Seems like a lot, but that includes lap tickets and fuel.
Lap tickets add up to €132 ($186) at €22 ($31) per lap.
Fuel will end up costing around €60 ($85).
This leaves the price of the rental itself at about €308 ($434) for the stage 2 Alfa or Clio and
€358 ($505) for the stage 3 Alfa.

Ron Simons is a very good instructor and a nice guy, I once had a couple of laps with him at Spa Francorchamps. His company now is RSRnurburg, an hour of instructions would be a nice add-on. However, driving the time you have yourself is also a nice way to spend your time ofcourse.

http://rent-racecar.de/ could be an alternative, I've heard about some good experiences with them as well.

Remember about the insurance, RSRnurburg says this about it :

"What if I crash?"

You will need to pay for your own barrier damages and third party claims up to a maximum of €10,000. For damage to our cars the maximum amount payable is as follows; Alfa stage 1 €4000, Alfa stage 2&3 €6000, Clio €8000, R26.R €15000, BMW M3 CSL €20000 and GT3s €50000. Insurance for accident damage is available, see below.

"Are the cars insured?"

Yes, all our cars are road legal, taxed and tested. Their insurance policy specifically allows them to be used for hire and reward on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The excess payments are so large that they only become useful in the event of serious claims (€50k+)

"Can I insure the car against any of this?"

Currently, no. With due notice (more than 2 weeks) it is sometimes possible. Please speak to us.
