considering buying an e36 m3

Postby helalo » Mon May 07, 2012 4:59 pm

hello motorheads
i currently own a z4 roadster 2.5i 2003.
im looking for a sport car with 4 seats but coupe. i had my eyes on these cars
-e36 m3
-e46 m3
-e46 330ci
-e39 m5 or 540i
-subaru BR-Z / or scion FR-S ( im not sure if i want to drive a none-BMW. just thoughts )

im just curious where does the e36 m3 stand in comparison for the e46 m3 or 330ci ? what does the e36 ( even if its an M ) that the e46 dont have ? why should i pick an e36 over an e46 ? which car serves better for a daily driver of around 25-50 miles a day.
what do i want from my car ? im in need of an elegant car when i have a lady with me, a road monster when im with the guys and a car i know i wont get bored of over 2 years. my z4 was abused by the previous owner and i fixed a lot of things on it but im afraid of whats to come from it in the future so i had to let it go and im having a hard time emotionally letting it go cause i keep saying COME ON JUST FIX IT ! its a sexy car !
so i need some words of motivation and a word of experience with such cars.
my car :)

we all like horse power :) but theres drawbacks on the e39 m5, isnt it a 5.0L engine ? im looking for a daily driver :D. i never owned any other car than my z4 which is 2.5i , so would 5.0L be twice the gas i put on the Z ? or are there other factors ? i would also have to see if the car i pick is available for a good deal in my state !
i wanna hear opinions !

You will be putting more gas into that M5 then your Z. If you are looking for a good gas saver while still holding your HP then I would go with the e46 M3, it will be alittle more expensive then your z when it comes to gas but you will have a lot more fun with the HP, styling and features it comes with. If you are looking to actually do something to the car and have fun with building things up then I would go with the e36 M3. Much better on gas then the 46 but not as much HP or as many features that the e46 has. Plus you might have to do some work to get it looking and working just the way you want but well worth the work. Now if you want the straight gas saver and project car then get an e30, very fun cars, very simple and if done right they give you great gas mileage. I can't really tell you what to get because its your own car and your own style but here a just a few things to keep in mind.

I personally like the e36 but if I had the chance I would get the e46 M3. I think they look amazing and are great lady magnets :)

If you can find an e36 M3 with low k's i would suggest to have a look.
But out of the list you have put down can't go wrong with an e46 M3.

just my $0.02

more gas yes maybe, But will this be your daily ? Just like truck nowadays and even some e36's get around 18 MPG avg hwy/city. But An M3 cant compare to the M5. This is how i see it since im actually convinced the M5 is the Right Choice for ME, maybe not for you.. but ive made up my mind and thats how I see it.

we can all say they are great cars :) but how can you tell which one of those cars will fit your life needs ?
a bit of a background on myself. i dont have a family so most of the time its just me or with some friends. im a daily driver about 25-50mile a day. im not ok with spending money on the car cause this broke and that needs to be replaced. but i also have days every now and then where im doing a quick race on the highway with a friend most of them are good mustangs and camaros 90`s or 300zx or and 240se fans. so let me put it this way for clarity
for me, price/reliability is most important.
perhaps i dont need an M version but since the e36 m3 isnt as expensive as the e46 m3, i figured why not... and they have plenty of aftermarket and OEM parts everywhere.
if i can not find a good deal on an e46 m3 i can and probably should keep my eye on a 330ci instead.( for some reason the e36 sedan looks good unlike the e46 sedan , for me ) the 330ci price is close to the m3 e36 and are better in interior luxury, i dont know about speed. like this one. http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/ctd/3001642616.html or this one http://www.starcarga.com/detail.php?id=137537.

frustrated. :|

In that Case Bust out with an E36 M!! You Can Def Find one well priced, and most of the time the price will reflect on its condition mileage etc so to state the obvious more $ for a cleaner more well kept e36 that you wont have to drop much $ into... But i have seen Very nice e36 M's go upwards of $13K almost as much as an e46 so i guess it all depends on what you really want. Is the Z a Automatic or Manual ?

pretty car ! but too far from me. i appreciate your help though guys. im having a hard time find an m3 e36 but theres plenty of 3 series 36 and 46
look at these
i see this good 330ci
http://s94826140.onlinehome.us/details.php?v_id=1188 i know the owner of this dealership and he`ll reduce the price AT LEAST 1,000$ for me. but im scared of its high mileage. does the e46 330ci go bad at high mileage ? downside is its mileage and its an automatic. i can live with it being an automatic though.
and i saw this g35 - i know ...its not a bmw but worth considering.
http://www.autoshowcaseweb.com/index-2.html the mileage is ehh...ok. and its the same dealership so he will drop the price much for me. but its still a bit too much. its the same price i got my z4 for :P so im aiming low this time. but i dunno.
and this different dealership is out of state but they have a special going on ,free delivery for any out of state car from any of their dealerships and free full gas upon buying a car. all these are fine ( disregard the 7 series lol )
http://www.highlineimports.com/web/inve ... ice=-10000
and this sedan e46 is nice ( i prefer coupe but oh well im flexible ). this dealership offers free oil change for life.
http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale ... 6616&Log=0
and here a 325ci e46. wish it was a 330ci. here id sacrifice speed and power but its a good car...do you think over priced though ?
http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale ... 0537&Log=0
ill post any M cars i find in next post if i see any good ones. i live in alabama, zip code 35124 if ur bored and feel like pointing me out to a car i can go in tommorow and get.

Honestly I dont think people are going to go through your selection of e46's on an e36 site lol That being said in my opinion you cannot get any better then coupe manual vader seats.... those are the best seats BMW ever mad and they come in the e36 M3. If you looking at price and reliability get a 99 M3, it'll cost you about 7-9k but they are fast, sexy and usually everything is ok with them as long as the PO took the time to maintain it.

i did try to look for good e36`s ! i found an m3 95 e36 for 4k but the price is....unusual , i figured something is wrong in it so i skipped it.
tell me, whats the first thing u do when you are looking to buy a BMW specifically any 3 series.

See if the Previous owner has done maintenance. I'll ask if he has records of the work done to the car. I ususally like to buy my cars off an older person because you know they probably haven't abused the car. other then that its all preferance, are you willing to accept a car that has some mods, do you want bone stock, do you want black interior, do you want dove interior, do you want vaders or do you want sport seats? All is based on what you want.

more or less. i prefer the M3 or 330ci but there is not any around for a good deal and good condition. the only good one i found was an M5 wth stage 2 dinan tuning and dinan free flow exhaust and dinan cold air intake system. has every package and navigation.
heres pictures of it...its beautiful. only thing it needs is clean the front headlights.

beautiful ha ?
i still have my eye out for 3 series deals around.
