For all the 4-bangers out there. Youve shown all of us that you can get all the grip of an E36 while getting well over 30MPG with your BMW 318i and is.

M44's don't have 150hp? I don't know who told you that but they are wrong. They only have about 4 more ftlbs torque.

You need the ECU, harness, and countless other things to make it work. M42's are ODBI and M44's are OBDII. If you don't know what that means, turn back now.

I'd just find an M42 and throw it in. It will be alot easier, and personally I like the M42 better.

m42 engine an the m44 engine wats the differance???

M42: 1.8L, inline 4, 1796cc / 110ci, Compression ratio: 10.01, 138 HP @ 6000, 129 TQ @ 4500
M44: 1.9L, inline 4, 1895cc / 116ci, Compression ratio: 10.01, 138 HP @ 6000, 133 TQ @ 4300

Like Hodge said the fact that the M44 is OBD II makes putting that engine in your car a big waste of time and money. If you were to go that route you might as well get an M50 from some 92'-95' 325, they aren't too much more expensive than the m44's, they're OBD I, and there are tons of em' out there. Also that would be a big jump in performance for you as well:

M50: 2.5L, inline 6, 2494cc / 152ci, Compression ratio: 10.51, 189 HP @ 5900, 181 TQ @ 4200

You're lookin at a drop in 0 to 60 time from 9.9 to 7.8 with an M50. Over 2 seconds, that's huge.
And you could get a vanos equipped engine as well!

Course there is the task of upgrading other parts of the car. It'd be well worth it. BMW SIXERs' KICK ASS! :shred

M44 came turbo from the Ti Body and M42 started with E30 and creeped its way into the E36 chassis, but like Jrock says your better off getting a I6 motor as its more bang for your buck, unless u REALLY Need the 4 banger for gas mileage to each their own but that's just a suggestion. GL man

M44's didn't have turbos?

No M42 or M44 ever had a turbo from the factory.

I would advise you put back a m42 to save your self the head ache. it will cost more money to do the m44 swap then to just replace your original engine, for what to gain 3-6 more lbs of torque. not worth the trouble. as far as the m50 swap i think its a waste of time. ( just my opinion and im intittled to it) if you want a 6 cyl bmw then just sell your 4banger and buy a 6. wouldnt that make more sense? The point of doing a swap is to do something different, and to have something you just cant go buy.
