Discuss all 1991-1999 BMW e36 Transmission & Driveline related issues here. e36 Euro 6speed swaps, e36 auto to manual swaps, and limited slip differential troubles go here. We also don't mind the occasional racing clutch and LTW flywheel questions.
E36 M3 1998 - Above 45 MPH I am getting a noise that is waffeling-like. Not harsh, not grinding, not clanking. It is like the sound one hears in a submarine from the prop wash. It occurs whether the car is in gear or not, but only above 45 MPH. A test says the rear wheel bearings are fine. No vibration. It gets louder with higher speeds. No vibration. You can't feel it in the wheel or in your seat. Just the sound. The experts at a good alignment shop for track drivers were puzzled after a road test and after putting on the dyno rack. Can it be the driveshaft bearings? I recently replaced the front struts and springs and replaced some of the muffler. Thanks for any help. franco
